June 17th, 2008 Sepalot – Red Handed CD Reviews, Reviews | 1 Comment »

Logo and face

It’s hard to describe who Sepalot is, it’s even harder to define his musical style. I had to listen to Red Handed three times to even come close to making my mind up. It’s not that his music isn’t appealing, far from it in fact, it’s just I’ve never quite experienced a musical journey such as this one before. Previously categorising his own music as “European” I’d have to agree. But it’s more than that… it’s European electro-funk-hip-hop. It’s like Prince, Outkast and a bit of Orb cross bread to produce something spectacular. Sure the physical implications aren’t worth thinking about but musically, well, I don’t think at this moment in time I could put it much better.

June 15th, 2008 Atmosphere – When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold CD Reviews, Reviews | 3 Comments »

Rap group Atmosphere release their sixth studio album, When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold, and its the kind of album that will sit somewhere between hip-hop hardcore and casual fans.

There is a slow, thought out approach which sometimes fails to ignite parts of the record, especially on the piano driven tracks. The best example of this is during the album opener, normally on most hip-hop albums the opening track is upbeat and heavy hitting, yet WLGYL,YPTSG chooses to produce a track which borders on lullaby rather than a hip-hop track.

June 14th, 2008 Ratatat – LP3 LP Reviews, Reviews | 1 Comment »

The title is pretty self explanatory. This is the third album from New York electronic duo Evan Mast and Mike Stroud, and straight off the proverbial bat this is a plethora of electronic goodness. Seeming at one with their machines / instruments they’ve created a fantastic concoction of up-tempo tracks and beautiful synth dominated masterpieces. I’ve seen some other reviews on the internets that have criticised the lack of cohesion between the 13 tracks as you progress through the album but in my opinion this is no bad thing. What you have hear is what would resemble an electronica mix cd. There is variety, Mumtaz Khan being a perfect example, for sure and these is obscurity in tracks like Gipsy Thread, another track with has been targetted for heavy criticism elsewhere.

June 12th, 2008 Stapleton – Rest And Be Thankful CD Reviews, Reviews | No Comments »

Stapleton have been on the go for what seems like an eternity. Now in 2008 they release a fourth album from the blue, where it seemed like another may never come. If you’ve followed the Scottish music scene at all over the last ten years, chances are you’ll have heard their warm tones and perhaps caught one of their live shows. If they’ve been to your fancy, you’ll be pleased to hear ‘Rest And Be Thankful’ manages to continue the high production values of ‘Hug The Coast’ and make it best friends with some classic Stapleton of earlier efforts.

If the numbers 9 and 11 are pushed at you, whats the first thoughts in your head?

Conspiracies? Osama Bin Laden? War in Iraq? George Bush?

How many people thought, the story of the people inside the buildings hit, and those who put their lives on the line to rescue them?
