STRAYLIGHT CAVERN

A collaboration with Cell Project Space, London, presenting invited artists’ work as part of a journey to the dark underbelly of sci-fi utopias.

The title of the piece, ‘Straylight Cavern’ is derived from cyberpunk author and sci-fi visionary William Gibsons’ Villa Straylight in his novel ‘neuromancer’. The Villa Straylight is a cyber-chateau of sorts, inhabited by cyber-deities where anything and everything is possible. Straylight Cavern offers the viewer a realm of possible otherworlds and dimensions, inspired by memories of Villa Straylight and it’s inhabitants, but goes on to refer to other science fictional situations where mankind has colonised natural rock or ice formations in order to survive, such as the rebel bunker on the ice planet, Hoth, in Steven Spielberg’s ‘The Empire Strikes Back’, or the androids cave in the film Michael Anderson’s film ‘Logans Run’. From the exterior, only a streamline, almost computer game generated graphic interpretation of glacial or rock formation is visible. Some of you that were in the know will remember the two Dundee musicians Billy Boyd and Gavin Bain aka Silibil and Brains who were aspiring rap artists. The duo, who were sick and tired of being ignored, simply because they were Scottish, by record industry fat cats decided to take matters into their own hands and dupe the industry by pretending to be Americans. The plot lasted a year before the duo finally decided to come clean after a series of delays in the release of the debut album.

Following the creation of a book, California Schemin’, based on their story and authored by Gavin, their story is to be made into a feature film with Irvine Welsh at the helm.
