Bringing together national and international artists, this group show explores alternative visions of the portrait. The works refer to both the formal and theoretical issues around historical and modern portraiture. Traditional aims of portraiture have been to capture a likeness, to pin down the true identity of the sitter, or historically to represent the status, character and profession. The artists in ‘Back of the head’ approach portraiture from a slightly different angle. Whether obscuring the face through the use of masks, or finding a variety of other means to describe a person, the work provides maximal and minimal responses to the discipline of portraiture.
Cooper Gallery, Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design, 13 Perth Road, Dundee, DD1 4HT. Monday – Friday 9.30am – 5pm, Saturday 10.30am – 4.30pm Read the rest of this entry »

If you’re a graphic artist or designer and for some reason find you have the urge to create a masterpiece while in your local coffee shop, you can no do so, through a web browser, with the worlds first online vector drawing tool, Raven. Raven is just one of a variety of graphic related tools being developed as part of a collection of tools collectively called Aviary, in various stages of production. Quite exciting.
Did I mention it’s completely free?
Just got sent this from Gavin himself.
Hey Everyone
Check out the Radio documentary I just did with BBC Radio Scotland. Its airing tonight (20th Feb 2009) at 11.30 If you cant get it on radio then listen to the live stream.
Its a mental story and its very hard to get the best bits into a 30 minute doc, its also extremely hard to summarize things quickly for radio and I believe everyone interviewed including myself spoke for hours. There is just to many big moments in the story but i heard there are plans for it to be turned into a series down the line and closer to the release of the book, We’ll see. Oh and ignore any recent tabloid press on the story as usual they get everything wrong, they are useless. Pick up Jane Graham’s Article in the Big issue this week or read Decca Aitkenheads Guardian piece which broke the story, I think its still on the website.
