Sam Bourne (Jonathan Freedland) has already been touted as the biggest challenger to Dan Brown’s title as the best thriller fiction writer. That’s a pretty big statement to make considering Brown’s unrivalled success in recent years. The Final Reckoning is possibly the best of Bournes latest books, surpassing previous works such as The Righteous Men and The Last Testament. June 27th, 2008 Dundee Blues Bonanza 2008 Book Reviews, News | No Comments »

Now in its 14th year the Dundee Blues Bonanza kicks off this weekend. Starting off in 1995 the festival has year upon year grown to become one of Europe’s most important Blues festivals. This year over 130 acts will be taking part across 34 venues in the city. This year the committee responsible for organising the event have decided to donate 50% of any profits made from selling the official programme during the festival to the Maggie’s Center following the recent passing of two of the festivals well known participants, Dennis McBride and Calvin Baldi.

The festival runs through from Friday 27th to Sunday the 29th of June 2008.

Despite all the hype this book received in the run up to its release it was always going to be an ambitious project. Following, briefly, the lives of 9 characters through sub episodic chapters, in 9 different locations, keeping together any firm story line was always going to be hard. Of course keeping together a story may not have been the authors sole objective in writing a book such as this one.

The book was first published in 1999, however the copy that I read was published more recently and features a redesigned cover. Of course this doesn’t make the book but it’s a nice feature. It was designed by Kai and Sunny.
