Black police 'disciplined leniently'

A senior police officer claimed he is being put under pressure to deal less severely with black and Asian police officers who are being disciplined.

Superintendent Peter Schofield, of Greater Manchester Police's internal affairs department, claimed he is being pressured by his bosses to issue less severe punishments to ethnic minority officers.

Mr Schofield's allegations come less than a month after an undercover BBC reporter filmed three officers from GMP making racist comments.

The officers later resigned.

Mr Schofield is believed to have claimed he has examples of Asian and black officers being dealt with more leniently when they have been disciplined.

A statement issued by GMP said: "We can confirm that a member of the Greater Manchester Police Force has raised concerns about what they believe to be a number of issues related to our disciplinary processes.

"It is the right of any officer to highlight concerns they have about fairness to their managers and we encourage our staff to question our processes.

"The concerns raised in this particular case were passed by the officer to the chief constable and the Police Complaints Authority and GMP has since been in dialogue with them to ensure that they have all the necessary facts.

"We have a fair and equitable disciplinary process, which is open to scrutiny from the relevant agencies.

"As with all other forces, our disciplinary process is set out in a strict framework within police regulations."
