are you sure the sound is turned up in winamp/WMP whatever, aswell as on the volume control on the laptop, if its sound from a CD is the volume turned up on the CD drive bit (like turny bit on or beside the drive)
If its all workin the only thing i could think off is the soundcard being messed up
