I really don't like the music of U2, but I can respect that they're talented artists.

Like it or not, not all music takes the same kind of talent to create. Most of the music in the charts was written purely for commercial gain, there's no soul to it. The lyrics were written purely to appeal to a certain demographic, the music simple , catchy and unchallenging.

If you'd read the thread, then you'd know that we're not saying this music is bad, based on the fact that we don't like it.

Look, if I tried to claim that "spot the dog" was as good a literary work, as the works of Shakespeare, I'd rightly be called a moron. But because it's music taste, everyone has to get all politically correct, and up in arms about the fact someone could possibly judge one artist to be better than another. Some forms of music are just technically superior to others, get over it.

Just because certain music doesn't require the same amount of technical musical expertise to play does not mean it has any less value to the people who like it. Sometimes simple can be good. A lot of people hail Smells Like Teen Spirit as being one of the greatest songs ever written, but a monkey could probably be taught to play it. The music which is written for commercial gain only acheives commercial gain because a lot of people like it. Personally I agree with you when you say that most pop out there is rubbish, but thats just my opinion, and the fact that I hold it doesn't mean that the people who like pop music have inferior tastes to me.

Music is written to satisfy a certain audience. Its like the way in which Spot the Dog is one of the best literary works for pre-school children and Shakespeare is a great literary work for adults. With music, a pop fan may consider Westlife to be great whereas you obviously will not. It doesn't however mean that you are right.
