The only way you can argue that a tree falling in the woods doesn't make a sound, is if you ignore science and take the wanky philisophical route.
In my opinion, it's not much of a step from there, to just discard logical thinking entirely.
Most of us take it as a given that philosophies such as existentialism for example, are just thought exercises, and don't actually have any bearing on the world around us. There's no way for me to prove absolutely that everyone else isn't a figment of my imagination, and that they don't just disappear when i leave the room, but generally we take it for granted that that is not the case.
