You're a fairly opinionated traditionalist, fair enough, but I wouldn't be so quick to cry down alternative forms of expression on the guitar. There's been a rich history of quitarists who eschewed standard tuning, like Thurston Moore, Alberts Collins & King, Jimmy Page, Kim Thyall, or even Jimi Hendrix (I believe Eb technically counts.)

Most of the time at home, I'm happy playing in E, playing along with classic rock or just noodling for my own amusement. In my band however, we tune down a perfect fifth (to A) and that gives us a sound it would be impossible to replicate at concert pitch.
