They use a 24.75" scale (if it is essentially a carbon copy SG), where as fenders use a 25.5" scale

So that could be the problem, still, try some heavier gauge strings, how low a string can go staying playable isnt that dependant on the guitar, my cheap bass has a great action and accoustic sound (its a let down when amplified, so im thinking a new pup could do it well), and it can go down a fair few steps before becoming unusable
