It was more the "I'm sure the dinosaurs said that too" thing, as if the fate of a unintelligent species that didn't develop any kind of technology has any kind of bearing on ours.
If civilisation doesn't get wiped out in the time in-between, I'd say it's pretty much a definite that there will be humans living on other planets in the next couple of hundred years. Mars and the moon at the very least.
The most advanced technology on the planet 1000 years ago was a sword.
