The explosion is probably a lot more detailed than it would be in the final game. It doesn't have a large environment, or any AI running around for example. All it's got to do is simulate the explosion, simulate the physics, and draw everything.
A tech demo usually doesn't really give you a good idea of what games on the console are going to look like, because it's a hell of a lot easier to get something looking really nice, when it's just a limited tech-demo, with not much going on other than what you're demonstrating, than in a full-on game, which is doing a hell of a lot more work.
Don't get me wrong though, I'm sure the games will look amazing.
