I was trying to work out this, and having analysed this in great depth (for 2 minutes):
I think it is 'fitting' rather than 'ironic' that you ran out of credit during a complaint about having no money.

It's not an easy word to define. Not even language scholars agree on whether a certain situation is "ironic" or not. For instance, if Alanis and Moose (Alanis's childhood costar cum nemesis) both moved independently to LA from Ontario and later became lovers, some would argue that this situation by itself constitutes irony. On the other hand, if Alanis and Moose each moved because they individually were convinced that Ontario was devoid of potential mates, and then met each other at a bar in LA, that would be ironic.
If the phone thing happened to me I would have said to people that it was ironic as well though, but I think technically.. it is just kind of, par for the course.. you are skint, you were phoning to get a rise, and you ran out of credit. I think irony is more about the... uhm... bittersweet contradiction...
This is not a dig, this is just an exploration of that grey area that is irony as I would have called that situation irony too, in passing comment, which is what your post was anyway, so this shit is irrelevant.
