You're right dude it does vary ... only slightly though... you can pretty much get it how you want by knowing your own sound !!, i find that what i'm looking for outta the PA is usually easy as hell to get.... and i've never heard anyone complain about my live vox yet when i've done the sound....

the only bad thing is... i can never get them right on recordings myself, but a good engineer allways nails it for me
