Can you suggest a few brands/makes that are mid-range quality and price? I'd like to spend around 200GBP, but have no idea if that's realistic or not.
I've looked up a few of the beginner guitars suggested earlier in this forum, but not sure how to even figure out quality.
any thoughts would be appreciated.

Yamaha, Washburn, Jim Deacon i guess.
There are quite a lot of brands around that price. What you want to make sure is that its a solid top and not a laminate.
In case you're not sure what that is - a solid top is where the panel of wood with the hole in it that the strings pass over is one piece of wood. This gives better resonance and improves with age. Cheaper guitars are normally laminate/ply wood. that stops the wood resonating.
For £200 though, a solid top shouldn't be hard to find.
