Good to see healthy debate about all this.
The DJs / bands point was particularly interesting. You'd be very hard pressed to book an up-and-coming DJ for free, let alone 3 or 4 for the same night!
For "Dundee" you can replace with "Scotland" or any other city. The situation is similar everywhere. Bands are too eager.
The point about gigging further afield is also true.
Considering how well a lot of bands (like The View, The Rise, guitar indie bands etc) would be received in north England, bands like that should definitely try to hook up with other similar bands in Newcastle, Liverpool, Leeds, Manchester, York, etc. There's a huge 'market' for it just now as the NME is as pro-Brit indie as it's ever been, which is why The View may well be very successful.
The hardcore bands would go down amazingly well further south. Eg. I've passed cdrs of Kaddish & Perineum onto friends in south england and the reaction is the same - 'fucking hell they're amazing! how come they're not massive?! etc.'
There's plenty of bands in Dundee that although I don't like musically, I'm more than happy to give contacts to & help out. But if I mentioned on this board 'I don't really like band x', band x will then probably start an argument about it.
Dundee lacks the infrastructure of Glasgow & Edinburgh, so I would definitely back & encourage the likes of Fat Sams and what they're trying to do. At the same time, you should never sell yourself short. Like binary guy says, DJs dont play for free. If they review the payment option in the future that would be a good start.
