To be fair on Nook he does take any old junk.
I think I preferred it with less inhabitants, it's hard keeping up with everyone now. A rabbit (I think?) called Coco left the other day but we hadn't bonded sufficiently enough for tears to fall from my eyes. My favourite, Moe (a blue cat), did threaten to leave but I talked him out of it. I have a picture of him in my house and everything. Another called Jay has been ill all week and I give him medicine everyday but he keeps falling back into it.
