On any string instrument, every time you half the length of a string you double the frequency it vibrates at, and thus produce a note once octave higher. So on a fretted instrument the 12th fret is halfway between the nut and the bridge, and the 24th fret is halfway between the 12th fret and the bridge.

I would measure the distance between the nut and the 12th fret (the actual fretwire) on your neck, then set the bridge saddles to the middle of their range of adjustment and make the distance between the bridge saddles and the 12th fret the same as the distance between the 12th fret and the nut. This should make the 12th fret divide the string exactly in two, and also give you the most leeway to make intonation adjustments at the bridge.

By the way, I have no idea if this is the proper way of doing this, that's just what *seems* right to me.
