You don't need a credit card, a debit card will work too. True, not everyone has debit cards, but people are more likely to have debit cards than credit cards.
As for using it online, it's up to you, but the data is encrypted, which makes it safer than doing it over the phone. (Unless you're doing it on a PC with no virus scanner, and you visit lots of dodgy sites
