If it's a laptop and it wasn't bought specifically for gaming, it's probably because the graphics card is shit. The graphics cards that come in most people's laptops are shit for gaming.

Unfortunately you can't upgrade the graphics card in a laptop.

Another possibility is that it's memory. Maybe in larger areas, the game streams in just enough that you go over the limit of what can be stored in RAM, and bits of the game start getting paged in and out from the swap file.
