I'd like to chime in here, if i may.
I think if we're talking about preferred recordings, it doesn't really matter what my or anyone else's opinion is.

Anyyone could argue for weeks about these things and never see eye to eye.
If we're talking about acoustic physics and colourless reproduction, there is to some degree, a science that exists which attempts to quantify and better understand the behaviour of sound, behavour of instruments, the analysis of the products which capture sound, and their results.
When this 'science' exists for the purpose of better understanding the nature and behaviour of what one works with (especially if that is one's profession) i think there should be no shame attached to giving it some credence. In my opinion, there is nothing at all wrong with trying to understand what you do as fully as possible. I can only have the utmost admiration for anyone who does that.
This will inevitably percolate into the way you approach your work, and for many sound engineers, this is manifest in them continually striving to acquire more accurate equipment. Many engineers' reasons for doing this is that if a signal is to be manipulated, they would rather have some degree of control over than manipulation than leave it to equipment to colour the signal in a way which cannot be reversed.
Unfortunately, more accurate equipment, with less colouration usually costs more money.
I don't think robin is a soulless engineer, i think he's very mindful of the physics of what he's doing and i have nothing but respect for him and the working knowledge he has amassed through tireless dedication for the last 6 years, while still at affordable rates.
As a long standing client of Robin's, i can say that every single player in laeto has never been happier with any results than with the results we've achieved with him. We have discussed this at length, and as people who are all very interested in (and some of us 'qualified' in, whatever that means) sound engineering, its effective application, and primarily how our band sounds, we would not consider recording with anyone else.
What's more, Robin has improved and continues to improve... dramatically. His array of tools is constantly improving as well, and this in my opinion has only made the results better. I'm happy to put this down to robin understanding what he needs to do or to aquire to achieve the standards that he sees fit, and doing it or getting it.
There is this prevalent notion however, that one can achieve great results without having to spend a bajillion pounds, and i totally agree with this. This notion has never been more true than when it has applied to recording with Robin Sutherland. Very affordable rates, bulletproof understanding of every part of his 'studio', a real passion and enthusiasm for what he's recording, the people's he's recording with, their tastes, and his commitment to making people happy with their results. Robin is the epitome of exceptional value.
