Last time I formatted my hard-drive to reinstall windows my DVD's refused to play, then when I updated some stuff I started getting video but menus didn't work and there was no sound. I seem to remember things only got better when I downloaded VLC media player. Everything's fine now and I haven't had to download any codec packs or anything. May have just been a windows update that fixed it though.
