Having a belief in matters such as these is never based on rational thought because this is not the point of having a belief. It's a matter of the heart, not the head, to simplify it. This does not mean a person is devoid of all rational thought in their day to day lives.
It may trouble you that I or others would not need scientific proof to believe in something, but that's the way many people work and rather than scoff at it, should at least be accepted or try to be understood. It's just another way of thinking.

Rather than be duped and angered by psychotic evangelists in Middle America or soldiers following a Jihad in the Middle East, it'd be more productive to realise that many 'normal' people are religious and spiritual and that it's not in fact an evil concept or notion and that the majority of people indeed get a lot of good out of it (whether it's simply believing in an after-life or going to the extreme of following organised religion).

If everyone was tolerant and respectful of everyone's beliefs (yourself included), whether you believe in an ancient bog monster, don't believe in anything at all or believe in the stereotypical western vision of God then there would be no problems. It seems lack of tolerance is to blame for many conflicts rather than a doctrine in the religion itself.

I also believe a lot of the world's current conflicts are the result of everyone shitting themselves that the population is greatly increasing and resources and land are running out and not religion.

I may have talked a lot of shite in a few people's eyes here and I don't believe I am 'right' or speaking some sort of truth, it's just my viewpoint on stuff. I'm always open to new viewpoints so spew forth.
