Alex, in firmly believing that no god exists, you're just as "wacky" and "out there" as religious types who firmly believe there is a god.
An appropriate (and frequently used) analogy is a sealed box that you have no idea what's inside. The stances go as follows
Theist - I know what's inside the box, it's X
Agnostic - I don't know what's inside the box
Weak atheist - I don't know what's inside the box, so I'm going to assume the box is empty until I've seen evidence otherwise, and repeat this assertion until evidence is provided.
Strong atheist - The box is empty.
My mum's a protestant, she goes to church most Sundays and I believe she's a good person - she's not funding George W. or anyone who seeks to bring about the end of the world. I don't even know if she literally believes there is a God. But she believes that living your life in a christian way makes you a better person. For you to say she's evil just because she has faith in something for which there is no evidence is pretty offensive, especially when you have a pretty similar faith.
Personally, I'm an agnostic - I don't worship any god and I don't really care what other people believe in.
Edit: "Here's a nice list if anyone ever tries to tell you the Bible is the Inspired Word of God (ie. dictated by him, word for word and, thus, infallible)"
not all Christians are like that though, are they?
