I'm not defending religion, just sayin'.
I don't think I'm risking much by guessing that more people have died as a result of religion (whether it be in war time or otherwise) than of anything else.

I don't believe that Christianity has caused more wars than anything else but I do think that more incidents of violence have been committed in the name of 'god' than anything else (whether those committing them believed themselves to be instructed by 'god' or not.)

Certainly the main points of conflict and misery in the Middle East have been religious over the last couple of thousand years.
