I'm not defending Heston. You're looking at it from the wrong angle.
Michael Moore was a dick for going after a debate with a man with Alzheimer's and using it as some sort of sockdolager. He could have debated with another high-level member of the NRA who shared Heston's views and had all of his faculties intact, but he went for the easy kill. The ailing famous face.
Towards the end of his days, Heston was just a poster boy for the NRA. He wasn't actually doing anything other than spouting scripted rhetoric for them.
