Wow!

Quite an eye-opener.

My atheism isn't something I have ever given much thought to. I just always accepted that I wasn't religious and some people were. I guess I've never really had the need to think about it because religion has never had an obvious effect on my personal life.

This Dispatches programme has strengthened recent thoughts I've been having about becoming a more vocal atheist. I've only ever encountered one fundamentalist christian in my life and always just pitied her as a little deluded but no harm to anyone. I never really thought about the negative influence religion is having politically in this country and that people like her are providing a loyal fan base for it. I wasn't dumb enough to assume that everyone in UK parliament was entirely secular, of course, but this kind of christian lobbying always seemed very American and suitably mocked. The influence of the ignorant displayed during this show was really quite shocking and anything but amusing.
