bzzt bad logic.

Pot Noodles sell a lot, so they must be good.

Vengaboys also sold a lot of records. They must be magic.

Precisely why I said hype > talent. Generally the market is presented with a choice of the overtly commercial (eg Britney Spears), or the mildly 'different' (White Stripes). People can only make choices based on what they know. If they know nothing else but the narrow range they are presented with, how can they make choices outwith that range? Answer: they can't and don't, cos they're not sufficiently interested.

It's the essence of marketing, which is what the White Stripes are a good example of. It's arbitrary who the band are- The Whites Stripes were in the right place at the right time when the suits were looking for someone to fill that particular gap in the market.

White Stripes: the 'different' musical option for those who aren't really into music.

Ever heard of Jonny Greenwood? The guitarist from Radiohead, Who also happens to play the organ, synthesizer, xylophone, piano, recorder and mess around with sound effects while playing live..

read the post again- that's not what I was saying at all.

I was referring to the 'they sold a lot of records so they must be good' line of thought, that's all.

It's not that popular = shit.. not at all. There's a lot of great musicians who are popular. But popular doesn't imply greatness.

i was meaning my comment about The White Stripes being shit cause they have shifted a few units was said tongue in cheek as i have noticed people here seem to follow that line of thinking

this comment i mean by the way "i didnt expect anyone on this site to agree with it,after all The White Stripes have sold quite a few records so they cant be good"

anyway back to it,what a great gig it was

In what way may I ask? If you're meaning the fact he's a Rockstar, wears silly trousers and tops NME's 'cool' list every year, I'm afraid I can't get into the mindset of why that's relevant in making great music. If you mean more musically interesting, then I'm sure I won't be alone in saying you are wrong.

Heh. This is a silly argument. Yeah, the Stripes were very good last night. Actually much better than I expected.

I'd disagree, but I don't have much time for Radiohead at all.

Uh, why did this become a Greenwood vs White death match anyway?
