Yeah I read an interview in Empire and apparently it really was just a case of someone jokingly saying, "Why doesn't he just shoot him and get it over with?!"

It's was actually because Harrison Ford was suffering from a virus. The fight scene was supposed to be much longer, but he could barely stand on the day of the shoot, so they just adapted the scene for him to shoot the bad guy.
