The Wag's 1st Review
by Iain Elder
"02/05/04 Scallywag - Forget The Past Scallywag - Overlooking Some punk-rock from bishie's most under-rated band. My mate Gary (Scallywag's guitarist) sent me this on MSN; I could have got it off the band's website (www.scallywagonline.co.uk/mp3s) but I couldn't decide what tracks I should get (not having broadband, I can't just get them all and toss what I don't like . So anyway, today Gary sent me two of his band's new tunes, from their freshly-recorded second EP 'New Beginning'. The band's second recording is a huge improvement over their first effort, and I really love these two tracks.'Forget The Past' is upbeat and melodic; if you like Socal punk then you'll enjoy this. Features some lovely guitar arpeggios and sweet, sweet melody. Gary tells me that Ross wrote the song as a reaction to Pop Idol, and it is so obviously a Ross tune through and through. The song includes the the rather quotable line "I'm gonna give my soul away, selling it would be to passé...", heh... 'Overlooking' is rather more heavy and a bit moody and pensive (as you would would expect from dear Marko . Has the chunky power chords that I love, and not a lot of melody, and octavey basslines. It's all good, even though it does include the sort of whiney/echoey chorus that i am generally not a fan of. In fact now that I listen to it again, I don't like it nearly as much as the other one, 'cause the middle-eight is quite lame (where's Gary's blazing solo? :P) Anyway, i still think it's pretty good, 'cause why else would i have it?" |
