Battle of the miserable gits
Just saw The Cure`s new video. Sounds pretty cool.
I think I read that the Interpol guitarist said there are only 2 types of people - those that like The Smiths and those that like The Cure. Don`t know if thats quite true, but anyway, I prefer The Cure. Et tu? Last edited by A Quatorze : 18th June 2004 at 11:43 AM. |

I don't have to choose, I can enjoy them both, they're just 2 good bands from a similar era and as much as I love Interpol, that was a daft comment from the boy!
Anyway, The Smiths are tons better than The Cure, and Morrissey has aged less embarrassingly and far more gracefully than Robert Smith who looks like gothic Meatloaf. I do love the Cure and they are great to dance around to, although I think there was much more substance to The Smiths, Morrissey is a better showman and I think The Smiths are (literally) legendary whereas The Cure were just very, very good. I think a lot of people probably would say The Cure on the coat-tails of this "80s were actually cool" fad of late, and I'd been saying that way before it was cool to buy Dogtanian on DVD and no one remembered Ulysses and they'd laugh at my 80s compilations in Higher art. ![]() The Smiths' videos, however, are shite and The Cure wins on that particular battlefield. I also think allowing Cure songs on a car adverts and an advert for Hewlett Packard or Epson or whoever it is unforgiveable. Also unforgiveable: everything beyond 1990. ![]() Hope this clears everything up. PS. I am not related to Morrissey or in any way affiliated with The Smiths, and have no personal beef with Robert or any of the Smith family.

That Interpol guy was stupid. It's like saying "There are two kinds of people, people that like eating and people that like drinking."
The two make music of a similar theme/mood and came from the same time period and there wasn't any great Smiths fan/Cure fan rivalry I was aware of. The two will probably be enjoyed by similar types of people, although the Cure probably are a tad more fashionably alternative just now. Not a critique on anyone voting on this poll, just like.. a statement/opinion based in fact, The Cure sound more distinctively FROM the 80s whereas The Smiths have a timeless quality and in that the 80s are kewl right now then I think The Cure would win an out an out popularity contest by young people. ![]() I love the Cure though! x
