Hmm.. Mario games have far more depth to them, although as far as actual characters Mario is RUBBISH. Having said that, the whole universe of Toadstool Kingdom and all the characters and things is much more convincing and vast than Sonic.
I got the first Sonic Advance and it was absolute rubbish, basically I could just hold the D-Pad right and press jump occasionally and I'd complete the levels in superspeedy time, the only thing I had a slight problem getting past was the final boss. That's why I sold it on quickly on Ebay. So, sorry Sonic, you are the cooler character (maybe a bit too cocky for me to like you properly) but Mario wins my vote.

I think after completing a Mario game, especially 3 you feel like you've made a big acomplishment in life whereas after completeing Sonic you knew you ran around for a wee while and did the classic up, down, left, right A etc cheat but......
Sonic was way cooler, he was like a Fonzyhog |

Sonic for the following reasons
Mario games, while longer, involved reapeating several levels to complete 100%, the Sonic games required skill in the bonus stages and did not resort to such underhand tactics The levels in the Sonic games had much more going on and at least one original feature per stage instead of repeating the same tricks over and over with a different set of cutesy-poo graphics After finishing Mario games i have never had any desire to return to them (except Mario 3) The Bosses in mario were very boring (hit him three times ...again. How will he attack me...oh right the same way the bosses have been since Mario 3 - great) There nothing in a Mario game that has ever been as much fun to play as Sonic and Knuckles For Marios defence the first Sonic adventure is pretty poor and the voice they have given him ruined the character. |

It's worth getting sonic adventure just to hear how unenthusiastic he sounds when he says 'tails, you're gonna crash, aaah'.
But it's the same story as tom and jerry, they ruined it when they made them speak. |

This is like saying Sega vs Nintendo
mario is the great uncle of all side scrolling platform games, the short, fat plummer invented adventure. Sega dont actually exist anymore... |

That goes without saying. I always found that Mario games had a lot more depth and they were a lot more fun to complete than Sonic games ever were, even though the storyline in pretty much always 'Bowser's kidnapped Princess Peach! Who on Earth will save her?' At least that works. Tis always fun.

by next monday i'll own sonic collection for my gamecube and mario allstars for my new yellowed-and-slightly-damaged snes. both of them still give me that lovely gooey nostalgic feeling, but at the moment i'm more looking forward to sonic...
