Lightbulb Drugs 'mr Bill Hicks'

'See I think drugs have done some good things for us. If you don't think drugs have done good things for us then do me a favour. Go home tonight and take all of your records, tapes and all your CD's and burn them. Because, you know all those musicians who made all that great music that's enhanced your lives throughout the years? Rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreal fucking high on drugs, man.'

Except straight edge bands. And, well... any band with members who don't do drugs.

Your argument is vague. What kind of drugs? Illegal ones? Then if so, under which countries law?

Those bands are America and British, the laws about illegal drug are different. If you're saying all drugs, then do heavy painkillers and sleeping pills count? I'm trying to get some kind of reasonable dicussion out of this, as the original post will get ripped to shreds by people because it's not really saying much to promote a discussion and that's what a forum is supposed to be about.

my appologies
i think that other people out there will know what i'm talking about but to answer your question yes heavy painkillers and sleeping pills would come in to the equasion, people like Elvis and janice joplin where heavily addicted to these type of drugs.

Okay. Now would you say that they made amazing music as a result of the experience of using drugs, or do you think that drugs were already such a part of the scene/culture that they may as well experiment with them?

As in, are you saying that you feel that mind altering chemical use/abuse and creativity are intrinsically linked?

I would have to disagree with that, because for one, there are so many amazing bands/artists who don't publically state they use anything so it would be impossible to know for sure.

Opinions?

I think that drugs certainly did have a lot to do with the music that was written in the 60's and 70's. Conceptually, i'm pretty sure it was a big influence. Do you think 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds' would've been written without drugs? Probably not man.

bands like the beatles openly admitted to taking drugs like LSD and canabis to expand there minds, although it can not be proved that it did make a difference to there writing ability it does explain a lot of there music.
as for artists who dont publicly state that the take drugs, in the media fuled inviroment we live in it would be social suicide for anyone to admit they openly take drugs.
i do belive bands like Busted and mcfly dont dabble though lol

Ie, that they are so linked that musical creativity and inspiration demands mind altering substances.

i'm not saying that to be a creative musician you need to take drugs but it has been a contributing facter in a lot of music which we know and love.

It doesn't demand it, but i certainly think it can stimulate musical activity.
