Compilation review
Various Artists – Corpus 2004
Nemesis Productions - July 2004 Publication date: 24 October 2004, 22:12:03 | Author: Stuart A Hamilton Obviously sick of waiting around for the record company executives to head to the frozen wastelands of Scotland (although to be fair the words wasteland and Livingston do go hand in hand), Nemesis Productions have set out to 19 unsigned metal and punk bands on to one CD and sell it to you, the punters, for a bargain £3. Although, my CD player reckons there are 20 tracks, so I may have some names mixed up. And it is well worth the price of admission, which is what a pint costs you in Central Edinburgh. Granted, there is some dross to wade through, but when you happen upon a gem, it makes it all worth while. “Curse The Day” by Errata is one such gem, all acoustic guitars and angst, the ska punk of Catholin is another. There a few too many generic death metal growls dotted about here and there, but that is what the skip button is for. Of the more brutal acts, Leechhate are particularly good, teetering on the border between shambolic and magnificent, one part Slipknot, one part Slayer and one part Korn. Misled Youth appear to think they’re from Compton, but “Capgun To The Head” is a catchy little song, with a nice NWOBHM riff offsetting the punky melody. Unless they mean an actual capgun. You know, the ones from the seventies where you threaded a roll of caps through a plastic gun and then had the joy of small explosions going off. They made them illegal shortly after we eight years olds sussed out that if you put all the powder together you could make one big explosion! Nearly as good as Errata are Ramage Inc, who have a good grip on song dynamics allied to a biting riff which leaps all over the place as they cram as many genres as possible into one song. Sons Of Slaughter are the best trad metal act on offer, and “Leviathan” is a hulking beast of a track which Alice In Chains would have been proud of. So 18 tracks for £3? You shouldn’t be thinking about it, you should be doing it. Send an email to nemesisproductions_scotland@hotmail.com or send a £3 cheque (payable to M J McManus) to Nemesis Productions, 38 Hobart Street, Livingston EH54 5BN. Well good to get a mention out of all the bands on that cd. And yes we do mean capgun as in the seventies/eighties toy!!! Compton......HA! |
