My understanding of Atkins is it pushes your body into a different state of metabolism, which is achieved by seriously cutting down on carbohydrates, I forget its name. It dramatically increases fat use if I remember correctly, so you lose a lot of weight quickly.

The problem with it as far as I understand is that is a finely tuned state for your body to be in, and is pretty easy to slip out of. When your body leaves the state, your body weight goes back to its normal equilibrium ('you put all the weight back on'). Also if I remember correctly you have to enter and leave the metabolic state for different periods of time.

I had a little read of it and it sounded quite complicated and a bit of a balancing game so I thought 'naaa I cant be bothered'. I think the advantages are that a lot of people who eat a traditionally very unhealthy diet only need to make a few minor changes to reach the metabolic state, so its quite a good idea for them.

One of the other problems is ignorance, it seemed quite complicated when I read about it, whilst most people think (probably due to tabloid and TV press) 'Atkins, thats eating no carbs, innit?'. As far as I could tell no this ISNT the Atkins, it is much more complex and subtle than that. Someone correct me if Im wrong, it is about 2 years since I read anything about it....

Oh yeah and Ive read no empirical information on the longterm effects whatsoever, positive or negative. I have only seen press stuff saying 'its good' or 'its bad'.

I think im right in saying that the atkins diet has been around since the 70's. There was a couple on a documentry a while ago, who still to this day are on the atkins diet. They both got a medical to see if they had any imbalances and thy never, both were fit as a fiddle.

The state your meant to be in on atkins is called ketosis. You get ketosis sticks to pee on to see if there are any ketones in your urine which are a by-product of burning fat. I think...

I think the general concensus(sp?) is that there isn't a super fast way of getting skinny that is going to work properly or be particularly healthly.

If there were an easy way to get skinny fast, don't you think more women would be doing it? My plan is to tell my mum to not buy any unhealthy crap when she goes shopping this week. Any extra money I have is gonna be spent on fags instead of chippys. Since I'm skint anyway this won't be too hard.

Then since my mum gives me shit for smoking in my room and stinking out the house. I'm going to go for walks while I smoke all my extra fags.

This won't be good for my health I imagine. But I should lose some of my belly.
