Though I liked both of them, it's definately Mario for me.
I like Mario because he is a balding, fat, Italian plumber. It's amazing that he wasn't scrapped for more of a typical super-hero style character.
Mario games are simply more fun to play, and they have stayed at a consistently high standard since the first one, Unlike Sonic, which was only really great on the Megadrive.

Also, if it wasn't for Mario we wouldn't have the spin-off film from the 80s "The Wizard" (anyone remember that?)

i'm a mario man all the way. bowser was a class villian, but what was with having to defeat him 8 times in the original nes game?

edit: i wrote 'vision' instead of 'villain'. man it's too early...

i had a mario game for my atari 2600
that was the first computer game i ever got, i voted sonic though, he brought me hours of game gear and mega drive pleasure, and if you paused it at the right time he looked like a snooker ball.

That game fucking ruled! I had it for the Game Gear- i loved it when you could shrink and move into all the little places that you couldn't get into before...

Sonic all the way. I have Sonic 1&2 for the Megadrive, and Sonic for the Gamegear. All three were fantastic. In some ways the game gear version was actually better, as it was more difficult.

Should be getting my dreamcast with sonic adventure soon. Class.
