Local Bands Should Be Played At Cage
This is Norrie from Self Made Man.
I have wondered recently why it is that no local or surrounding areas bands music gets played at cage. Probably because we don’t give ourselves enough exposure, so not many people know, plus I don’t think the dj’s have much if any of r music, apart from Self Made Man's Ep. and even then only colin has it cause Thursday is the only time it will be played, wen the numbers r low. who will dance to music they know? no one... i believe things could be different. I have a suggestion Currently on my pc I have the following bands Music: Equilibrium - ep 7 track A Written Apology - ep 4 tracks 3rd Born Sun - 3 tracks Obscenic - 3 tracks Soundshok - ep 6 Tracks (Arbroath) Scud - Ep 10 Tracks (Perth) Man Of The Hour - Album 12 tracks (Edinburgh) Hot Mangu - 1st & 2nd Ep (Aberdeen) Self Made Man - ep 6 Track My Suggestion is to take one track from each band, with their permission of course (so please reply), and put it on a compilation cd and give it to all cage dj's. Then put up posters in cage informing patrons of which local and surrounding areas bands music they can hear. Hopefully this way all bands will benefit from the exposure and the local scene as a whole will expand and grow with more people coming to shows. I have taken into consideration that some bands demo’s or songs are not of the same production quality as others, don’t worry I have the software to enhance all our music to a level that would be well acceptable to be played in cage, if the guitars bass drums or vocals or just the master volume needs boosting I can do that and enhance your sound. I spoke to Doug on Sat night and he would be more than happy to help us and the scene out Gav from 3rd Born Sun has said he’d like to be apart of this, I know all of Self Made Man wants to. Anyone else? Any band who would like to become a part of this just post here or email me or self made man. Get me your demo (of a decent studio quality) and be a part of this and the expansion of the scene. If all goes well cage will keep feeding r music to the public, with more compilation cd's who knows maybe even full ep's from each band. The future is what we make of it. |

nah its a shite idea then.
well not shite, just not thought out. no one in their right mind would want to listen to a solid block/constant play of (sometimes poorly recorded...i doubt u could fix all the sound problems with yr magical pc.) local bands. in alot of cases it would b mind numbing and horrid. im all for GOOD local bands to b played at cage etc because they deserve to be played and there is a demand. BUT lettin any old pish play because its "local" is ignorant. people are paying good money to go to the venue and listen to music of a good quality and dont want to hear something that sounds like a cat being raped by a bin. by all means make and give doug the cd, lets hope he has the sense to only play the good tracks. |

Obviosly i didnt make it clear enough to u, i would only put cd quality tracks on the compilation cd. i wouldnt accept any old shit. i have already fixed a number of tracks and brought them up to cd quality standard. the quality of the tracks u would hear would be good enough to rival any track played in cage I PROMISE. i dont want a solid block of a n hour of local bands i just want a few track played through out the evening.

aye i agree wi rich, theres plenty of local bands who id dread hearing although i think its a good idea to give them support and a bit of promotion, no?
then again it all comes down to what a certain person defines as shite tho, eh? ![]() i guess it would make sense to give the cds to the djs, let people know whos songs they've got available then let people request it. if they wanna hear it then fair dues, that way it will prevent crap they dont wanna hear being played. that took longer than i thought it should... |

AND even if they were cd quality which i doubt some are that still doesnt mean the technical abilities of the band live up to the standard. + i very much doubt doing this will bring these bands ANY added exposure. how many people do u honestly think will go up and ask who just played when they r out drinkin with friends? and yr posters wouldnt b much help because the band name and song title arnt that much of a hint as to what the song actually sounds like when it is playing. but then again, u make the cd, u give it to the djs and then itll b clear what happens. u dont need a public forum to tell u to make a local compilation to give to a local dj do u? or do u just want all the credit? oh well EXPOSE AWAY |

I've encountered this before at Coalesce. Enthusiastic member of a local band bugs you all night to play their demo - you do, and it sounds like it was recorded in a tin shed, at the bottom of the sea.
It clears the dancefloor (or in the case of the Yardstick demo, it clears the whole fucking venue - although the fire alarm did go off at the same time Solutions: 1 - Bands record demo properly with half decent production. My mates band recorded a demo with a home digital recorder and the quality was good. If you don't spend the time, effort and money why should anyone else care? I'm not entirely convinced just bumping up all the levels on a computer and then re-burning it onto CD is the solution to every badly recorded demos problems. 2 - Give the CD to the DJ early on an let him play it when he feels it's appropriate. Accept that it will not be played at the peak of the night as it WILL clear the floor. Unless your bands fans have a syncronised dancing team. 3 - Don't dance to your own bands demo - it's like public mastrubation. 4 - Accept that 99% of the crowd in the venue won't give a toss.
