No, I'm pretty sure that's still illegal in the UK.

Technically it's illegal to copy a CD onto tape so you can listen to it in your car, so I'm sure downloading a track you already own is illegal too.

How about a jukebox where local bands can submit their songs to - like they have on aberdeen-music?

i like the sound of that too, good idea, though i'm guessing KJ would need a much bigger server to host all the music, i know bugger all about it though, would be great if it could be done.

It would put the bandwidth costs up a lot I imagine

It's something I have looked into but at the moment the traffic on the site doesn't justify a bigger server. Hopefully that'll change when the Glasgow push gets underway and perhaps with a new sponsor we can afford this service.

If anyone knows of a cheaper alternative then let me know and i'll see how feasible it would be to set it up.

Also about the bandwidth costs, we currently have around 60gig to work with since we changed hosts so for a short while anyway the bandwidth probably wouldn't exceed that on a monthly basis. The only matter would be the server speed depending on how many people were listening to the streaming music.

dBpoweramp Music Convertor

One of my all time favourite programs, it has the simplest interface on earth but also offers the most complex of options for those that want to get right in deep with conversion. It's free, and it has a settings page where you can download a numerous ammount of codecs straight into it - Lame MP3, Monkey Audio, Ogg, Flac, WMA, etc

What would be good would be some sort of "getting gigs" bit. I know lots of bands just starting out who could really use something like that. You could list all the open mic nights, showcases and turn-up-and-play gigs, as well as putting articles on press kits and self promotion. If there were links to actual promoters in Scotland it would be gold-dust.

I've thought about this for my site but I don't have the money or time
