is there ANY way in getting round this whole tuning problem, cos to be honest, we wouldnt really be classed as any type of metal if we kept at E standard tuning!

what about METALlica, they play in standard tuning a lot.
It shouldnt be the tuning that makes you "heavy" or more "metal", just what noises you can get from it.

I know but it just sounds better heavier, even if it was just drop d, the guitarists say their guitars go out of tune cos of their whammy bars.

I guess us bass players dont have that problem!

pa u guys should play as low as u feel neccisary but dont think that by tuning down it make it more heavy this is usually not the case tuning down will allow u to reach lower notes(obviously)but its all in the writing.do wot suits ure music not wot suits a genre.

Cheers for the info guys, but i think we should down cos it will sound better, they said they need that floid rose, to prevent their guitars going out of tune

i thought it was the floyd rose that made it go out, on my mates ibanez it does anyway.
yeah, queens of the stoneage's most recent album was all tuned right down to C, which gave it a really dark feel, its amazing

i agree with owenboskoala, our music is heavy enough as it is and we shouldnt have to conform to any type of genre, we should make our own(?). my guitar anyway is not good enough for lower tunings, technically it doesnt suit our music cos its a Ibanez GRX70 when i need an RG somethin or other. when you have the floyd rose and bolt on bridge lock, you have more flexibility with your tunings. with me and chris' effects, i think we're heavy enough, for now at least!

I'e taken some quotes from nothr topic that might help out here.

Hmm, I think it all depends, VJ Used to downtune each string just half a step (down to the flat) we found it sounded just that little bit meaner, and it was slightly easier to bent notes etc when your playing/soloing really fast. - Harris

i use a jackson rhandy rhodes flying v without a trmole system, i usually detune to a c# or sumtimed a b. but the guitar shouldn't go out of tune if you have a thick gauge strings on, i use gauge 10's and they do the job just fine, wot kind of guitars do your guitarists use?
- Sweepthelegsjohnny

The rhythum guitar is an Ibanez grx70, i forget what the lead guitar's correct name is, thats an ibanez too, basicly a step up from the grx70 though. - Marco_Equilibrium

shouldnt b any probs in detuning, try dr strings gauge 10's ye olde dimebag darrells choice of strings, - Swepthelegsjohnny

can't argue with Dimebag Darrel now can you! lol.

Harris's Idea about tunning sounds interesting, not for the heavynessmorethe solo side of what he said. Think about it. Anyway. I'd love to see us go that bit heavier. Just for the extra agressive aspect, But obviously Ryan says he needs a more advanced guitar, ect.

But just now we should concern ourselves with getting these songs topped off for the shore gig. I heard Craig's thrashy bit for the middle of comatose and it sounds damn good, exacly what the song needs! Just to diverse it that little bit and give people something they can move to other than the chorus.

hey im u drummer so shouldnt have an opinion on this but, although i hate harris, he is right, what VJ (US!! lol) done was down a half step sounded great, but hey seems to me that if u want to be different use standard tuning! why go so low that it sounds like a muffled piece of shite?? as i said im a drummer

the solo thing about tuning half a step down sounds cool to me. And VJ sounded amazing, so it's worth a think at least.
