Ah. John Hughes at his best. Formerly an educational aid at my school in Religious & Moral Education (no kids, being different or a goth or a geek doesn't mean you have to KILL yourself), this film is actually quite good. I used to enjoy it more before though, when I was pretty 80s obsessed. Ally Sheedy looks good in it, despite the dandruff and it's funny in places, but the smoking pot scene is cringeworthy. Especially Sporto's completely unrealistic "high" which causes him to vault bookcases and wear ridiculous zip-up fleece bodywarmers.

I used to really love this, but watching it recently I forgot the reasons why.

Meaning that the Milk: the original soft drink adverts of the 80s are the best thing that Don't You Forget About Me has ever been used in.

This is true. I just like her jacket really and that she probably listens to the Smiths and drinks "vokka".

More Ugly McUglerson and the Ugmos, incidentally.

I also seem to have fallen out of love with the Breakfast Club a little. I'm not sure what seemed disappointing though as other films of that genre - notably Pretty in Pink - still seem just as great.

Pretty in Pink is actually still really good, however I think the ending should have been a more Hughesian "championing the underdog" type affair and Duckie should have got her. I know he does get a girl, but it's just irritating that Andie is so fucking fickle. Harry Dean Stanton puts in an amazing turn as her dad though, especially when he goes nuts and is shaking her desperately and then starts crying. Cute when he gets her minging dresses and thinks she can make something of them.. and boy.. does she?!

Plus "OMD - If you leave" at the end is lovely and an intimate last dance alone in the car parking lot.

Andie, you said you could never believe in someone who didn't believe in you.. I believed in you.. you just didn't believe in me..

It's a great film! Especially to watch at 4am or something. I need to get it on DVD. I've lost my video of it.
