the dice man

this book could potentially change your life, if you're mental. it's the partly factual story of a bored new york psychiatrist who decides to start living his life by the roll of a dice, leaving every decision he makes up to chance. the idea is that if you really want to know who you are, you have to destroy every preconception you have about yourself, and what you have left, the parts you can't destroy, is who you really are. i tried it for a bit, but i was rather half arsed about it, i had a cool set of dice, one black with white spots, one white with black, which i lost down the back of someone's couch at a party. loaded magazine, which way back when could actually be pretty intelligent sometimes, did a feature on it where one of their journalists did it for real, which lasted for several issues, and got a bit out of hand. luke rheinhart, the author, claims that to this day there are large and succesfull companies which are run on dice theory, but you never know what to believe with the old fucker, the dice might've told him to say it. apparently at the gates' album "slaughter of the soul" was inspired by it.
