Brilliant movie. Think I'll comment more tomorrow. Just want to pipe up with an idea for the next one that they include a generous amount of backstory for the Joker, covering his tragic beginnings, and really fleshing out the character. Would probably make it the best superhero film ever if they did.

Anyone got Christopher Nolan's number?

I think the whole thing was really good.

Spoiler:
Having read enough on the origin of Batman in "The Dark Knight Returns" to get by I was kind of grimacing at the inevitability of his parents' death. PLEASE DON'T LEAVE THE OPERA HOUSE..

I would have liked Gotham to be more art-deco though, but I think I only picked up these notions of that's how I feel it's MEANT to look through the stylised animated series and Tim Burton's signature elongated, clean-edged style from the first two films and how I like to think it's set in some parallell 1930s. Plus, I love the deco.

Also the heavy handed repetition/clarification of what was going on for the moronic American cinema going public.

Spoiler:
Oh my god, so if this train reaches Wayne tower this fear gas will spew out all over Gotham? So, oh my god, if this train reaches Gotham, right, THIS TRAIN, that terrible brain altering FEAR GAS will spew out, ALL OVER GOTHAM?!

I also felt that the ninjitsu training bits with the League of Shadows were a bit long and dull, I personally preferred the kind of.. character developing flashbacks to young Bruce Wayne and that part of the origin story: the psychological reasons behind Batman.

In all, fantastic, I just thought a lot of the EPIC journey to meet and train with the League of Shadows was dead time but then I think large scale battles with multiple characters in films are hard to follow, being a blur of camera cuts, fists flying and then resolution. But that's just me.

I also noted that Batman's love interest had hard nipples a lot of the time.

The Joker's origin is hazy at best, sure you've got the story he tells Bats in The Killing Joke but he admits himself he not sure if it's the truth. Still, as long as his name isn't Jack fucking Napier.

Anyone else notice that the "back-up" scene was lifted straight out of Batman Year 1 ?

I prefer to think The Killing Joke's interpretation is the truth, as it makes him seem a really sympathetic, tragic character and a victim of circumstance. It gives him and Batman more of an affinity as well, the loss of loved ones and terrible events having made them how they are. The Killing Joke origin story makes The Joker really interesting, and I don't know, I guess I never took that whole "not sure if it's the truth" thing literally, or even in at all because I liked the story so much.

I agree with this person. I'm not certain, but I'm sure I remember hearing a lot of fans were quite annoyed with Alan Moore's potrayal of The Joker in The Killing Joke. I think, however, that the key to a truly great villain is to make them, deep down, as tragic and sympathetic an human as the superhero. I hope Nolan does this, as opposed to writing a 2 dimensional Jack Nicholson type Joker (wonderful as that was). If he does, and if everything else goes right, I think we'll have on our hands not only the greatest superhero movie ever, but one of THE greatest movies ever in any genre.

I loved Gotham! It reminded me of Midgar, which made me all nostalgic and swoony.

I would have enjoyed Katie Holmes' nipples more if she wasn't Katy Holmes.
I hate Katy Holmes.
