The bodycount in Dark Knight Returns always amazed me. Hundreds of people, dozens of children AND David Letterman, if I remember correctly!

Have you read The Last Laugh or Emperor Joker? They're both pretty good.

Sorry I meant The Man Who Laughs, it's by Ed Brubaker and is about the first time Joker appears in Gotham. Emperor Joker's about 5 years old, Joker gets Myxlplyx's powers.

back to the film.

saw it yesterday, loved it.

few gripes though:

1. micheal caine as a cockney alfred? hmmmmmmmmm

2. a mini tank that can drive on a church roof? mmmmmmm

3. two baddies with not enough plot development with either.

4. although heralded by some for its removal. i liked the slapstick-comic book-campness of batman, and i always thought that came hand in hand with with the caped crusader.

saying that, i forgive all those faults because it was such a great film. some serious effort had been made to explain the origins of the gadgets, the car, the outfit and the man.

all the actors were great, im a big fan of christian bale and it good to see him take on another fantastic role. liam neilson as the jedi mas... sorry did i say jedi? i meant ninja! wonder how i could of gotten that mixed up....

all in all. this years best film, its a shame trash like tom cruise in war of the worlds and the poorly casted fantastic 4 will probably overshadow just how good this film is.

so go fucking see it.

Point one, your name is deadmike and yet you can't spell Michael properly. Sheesh.

Batman can rarely be accused of being camp slapstick in the comics, maybe for a brief period in the sixties when Adam West played him but that's all. There's not a great deal of humour in someone watching their parents gunned down in front of them.

I agree. The only reason Batman became 'Camp' was to appease certain pressure groups in 60's America, who had (ahem) 'Proved' that comics were detrimental to the nations youth. The comics followed the TV show to a certain extent, in an effort to chase readers. But Batman was never about campness, it was always a dry, black humour that he had, if there was any humour.
That's what I think makes Batman Begins so good. It could easily be the Batman created in 1939 that we see on screen (aside form all the technology of course).

E.

OH NO!!!! i made a typing blunder!!!! i'll go exicute meself imnediatly!!

i disagree with your other point. the old comics and series were nothing but camp and the fighting was nothing but slapstick. elements of this are very strong within the other batman films. you disagree? then id recommend you re-watch them.

no, theres no humour in the murder scene, yet i didnt expect there to be pie throwing at that particular part of the film, but the others managed to keep those scenes firmly seperated from the "camp" and the "slapstick".

my point was, every other format of batman (excluding the new comics) has a touch of tongue in cheek about it. this movie was completely straight laced. im not adversed to that, as i said, i loved the film, its just i noticed its absence.

The old comics were nothing but camp eh? Have you read any of them, it would certainly appear you haven't.

Here's a link for you

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batman

I direct you in particular to

Quote:
Initially, the "Bat-Man" was a violent avenger who carried a pistol and left his foes dead more often than not
Also,

Quote:
After a decade of colorful, campy adventures, Batman was returned to his dark and mysterious roots, giving rise to the character that most fans are familiar with.
A decade of camp adventures for a character who has been around since 1939. Hmm, I don't think that would suggest the old comics were nothing but slapstick.

You are wrong.

eh?

what do you call bonking two guys heads together thus knocking them out?

thats called slapstick. that can be found in all the films and comics bar batman begins.

what do call a villian who makes jokes everytime he enters a room, pushes a button, hits the hero?

thats called camp. that can also be found in everything that is batman. bar batman begins.

i am right. dont turn a good thread about batman into a pissing match. ive read plenty batman re-prints. i own plenty of the newer ones. i understand completely the darker more gothic edge of batman. i also understand wearing pants on top of tights.

your opinion is yours, mine is mine.
