bang on it . America wasn't portrayed as saving the day .. the whole point in the ending was that it wasn't militaryu power that won. I thought it was pretty awesome .. and i used to sit when i was like 5 and listen to the old musical verion on vinyl and that scared the shit out of me . The characters were pretty well built up and believable.. they missed some bits out but thats probably because of lack of victorian setting . But haven't been given a scare by an action/sci-fi movie for ages |

I thought that it portrayed despair well too... Two really terrifying bits were when the boy drives the car into the crowd, that was really horrible. Alien tripods are a bit unbelievable and fantastic, humans brutally attacking other humans out of desperation I can believe. It was well set up too with the dad talking about avoiding crowds when planning the journey, then him not waking up when the son approaches the crowd, you could see what was about to happen and it was horrible...
Also the crazy racist resistance fighter was a pretty scary bloke too. I was sitting in the cinema in Japan watching him and I cringed at every anti-jap comment he made, the setting I saw it in really emphasised his character, my boss had a little chuckle, i think he realised what was going through my head... Some of the sounds were really neat too I couldnt help but think the son was 'emo kid' hitting the 'mainstream'... Maybe I'm alone here... Weak points... I thought the pacing was really odd... It seemed to end very quickly, maybe a touch too quickly for my liking. Then again, I can't compare it to anything else. Thats about all I can remember though |

The ending was all very sudden and very short though, but I suppose in a wierd way it reflects the simplicity of the aliens eventual downfall. |

Saw it today (well, lastnight technically) - I thought it was class.
I've never read the book, listened to the soundtrack or seen the original movie. The only thing I found remotely disappointing about it was the predictability of the ending. The intro sequence combined with the classic "profound child knowledge" kinda gives it away:
I liked the way the film ended so suddenly, I think the point was that the abrupt ending was supposed to kind of take people by surprise, is it had been dragged out then everyone would have figured it out before the end. When they reach Boston I was just thinking "ok, nothing going on now - just make the family reunion quick and the explanation as short and non-insulting as possible". Which it was. Oh yeah - the whole bit with Tim Robbins (crazy guy in the basement) was totally ace. I think it was the best part of the movie. Also - I don't think any of the comments Robbins made were there for racist purposes - I think it was a subconscious hint at how to take out one of the tripod thingy's.

on the plus side i came out feeling a lot more awake and refreshed |

machines were great, aliens were great, the horrible noises the machines made were also great.
main flaw in the film was tom cruise. either tom really is an arse, or he was trying too hard to act like an arse in the film. the plot was pretty crap in a "signs" style, one families perspective on alien invasion. i much prefer the multiple storylines that you find with "independence day" and the like. its a shame that hollywood cant be bothered to make films better or put any kind of effort into a remake anymore. freshen up the faces and graphics and people will pay to see it. poor show. the original was far better on many levels. |

I think what you mean is - it's your 3rd least favourite out of all the box office smashers. Have you seen any of the following?: Spontaneous Combustion Nightmare On Elm Street II: Freddy's Revenge Exorcist: The Beginning Wild Wild West Son Of The Mask Open Water Jurassic Park III / Godzilla (same thing) Police Academy VII: Mission To Moscow Spice World You Got Served Bring It On Mortal Kombat: Annihilation Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie Bride Of Chucky ... and those ones are all relatively famous, off the top of my head - there are probably MILLIONS that were straight-to-video (if even). |
