I actually liked it! Thought on the whole it avoided any rah rah Americanism, and thankfully Speilberg stayed diciplined and there was none of the flab that sometimes blight his movies. Instead it went almost straight into the action and stayed totally focused on that one family for the whole film.
I also thought it was shot beautifully and the grainy, colour-drained shots of surburban America towered over by the huge Tripods were very striking. A solid, tense and effective Hollywood film! |

Indeed. I liked that it was less about lots of people. It was more just centred around one person (Cruise's character) rather than a family. It means that the audience feel more connected to that one character, fearing for their safety, their family's safety and seeing the world being destroyed from one perspective. Gives a better idea of what it would be like if it happened to you. When Cruise's character is in the basement with Robbins' and theres that exact point where he realises the guy is a nutter and will probably be the death of him and his daughter, everything sorta grays out as Cruise puts his hands up to his face and the camera slowly zooms in. I totally empathised - very cool. |

i thought the film was great and some ppl are judging it on tom cruise, so fucking what, he's playing a character, no point judging a film just because you don't like an actor. i thought it showed great realism in how humans would react in desperation to survive. some scenes of this are extremly horrific. eg. the car scene, still gives me shivers. ending wasn't as bad as i thought it'd be. i actually liked the ending, well apart from robbie's miraculous unexplained survival |
