Kung Fu/Martial Arts Movies
...I Love 'em
Just watched "New Police Story" last night and it just highlighted how amazing Jackie Chan is (and how wasted he is by any Hollywood director). The man should be made president of the earth or at least have every street named after him. Legend! Seriously though, who else gets a thrill out of seeing flying fists and death defying stunts? Favourites for me include: Police Story, Drunken Master, Ong Bak, Iron Monkey, Once Upon a Time In China, Fist of Fury, Kung Fu Hustle, Project A, Winners and Sinners...could go on forever, but won't. Kung Fu Hustle
"you know, with a little effort he could achieve great things." "yes he could become a lawyer or a doctor or something" "maybe even the worlds greatest Kung Fu master." |

Kung Fu Hustle has to be my favourite, although it uses a lot of CGI, the comedy, story and visuals are sheer genius!! Not to take away from Bruce Lee films of course, the master, but I found Kung Fu Hustle more memorable because it's just so different.
Ong Bak is very impressive Jackie Chan is awesome, and I want to watch Jet Li's Kiss of the Dragon (I think that's it's name) as I don't remember it so well. |

Not that i dont like Hollywood big budget blockbuster films or anything coz they can be ace...but that was the impression i got from Kung Fu Hustles cartoon-esc action. Or maybe im looking too deep at a damn good action-comedy. |

The stunt co-ordinater is the same chap who did the Matrix hence the piss-take bits ("the one", the final fight) etc... Has anyone seen Shaolin Soccer? It's made by the same writer/director/actor Stephen Chow. It's also very funny. Fair point about Hollywood tho, they can't do Martial Arts movies to fucking save themself. Would anyone want to watch "Unleashed" or "Rush Hour" over "Hero" or "Drunken Master"? |

Van Damage is a fanny, has anyone read an interview with him? I read once that he thought his ego project "The Quest" is the "Ben Hur" of action films, haha, it's fucking terrible. That said if one his films is on telly i'll watch it for comedy value i.e. the disco dance scene in Kickboxer. There were a few decent movies in the American martial arts boom of the 80's, Steven Segal and Chuck Norris could break an arm or two, but it's all about China and Thailand when it comes to busting heads with style. |

Fearless is one of the best martial arts movies i've seen for a long time, especially the bit when they are fighting on the platform and Li almost goes over the edge but manages to balance on the edge on his hands, amazing.
I also liked Unleashed. It had a nice feel to it.

Born to Fight is well good. It ends in an epic 30 minute battle or something. Ong Bak, Warrior King (both Tony Jaa) are good too. Warrior King especially for the 100 or so guys that get an arm or leg broken filmed over one take. Obivously any Bruce Lee is good. Snake in The Eagles Shadow is a very old Jackie Chan movie and has some superb Kung Fu in it, so many good styles. Kung Fu Hussle was alright, some crazy fighting scenes in it, Buddist Palm was a bit too far though..
Aye Kung Fu is class. I quite fancy a go at this Wu Shu stuff. |
