i loved this film. Thought it was absofuckinglutely stunning.
And o be fair to Frank Miller, it is actualy rather Historicaly accurate if you go by Herodatus's (sorry cant spell) account (which was written using accounts from survivors, and herodatus actualy visited the Hot Gates)

Everything was done over-the-top and i thought that made it that much more of a thrilling movie. The fantasy element kept it from being just another 'ancient war epic' like Troy and the comic book bleakness was inspired.

Plus...all the best lines where actulaly said by the real Spartans

"This is SPARTA"
"SPARTANS, WHAT IS YOUR PROFFESION?"
"come back with this shield or on it"
"Come and take them!!!"
"the medes arrows shall black out the sky....good, then we shall fight in the shade"

i thought the goat headed minstrel took the fantasy element a wee bit too far, that one just made me laugh! really visually amazing film though

to be honest i thought the historical accuracy (or ar least true to heroditus's account or whatever) made it suffer it a little e.g. the ending would probably have been cooler if they'd made a last close combat stand or something rather than being shot down.

the fantasy imagery was one of the best parts of the movie, if a bit wierd; i think i read afterwards that the idea is that the narrator is embellishing it a little after the fact.

good but not as awesome as i thought it was going to be.

what people need to rememeber is that although based on actual fact, it was also created around the comic book and thats where the cheese and over acting came from. without this it wouldnt have been anyplace near the same movie!

exactly. sin city pretty much kept all the dialouge as the books aswell, and that has some of the worst lines ever.

yes! i tried to point that out earlier haha

Frank Miller took a battle which actually happened (as youve all pointed out) but he focused on the mythology of the event, for instance the persian leader being a 9-foot giant - clearly he wouldnt have been like that but the Persians believed that their leaders were demi-gods and Miller took that and used it. Ofcourse a comic book like that is going to have cheesy one-liners! It'd be fucking boring otherwise.

And since when were cheesy films a bad thing?!

I think the point a lot of people are missing is that the whole film is told as a story by Dilios.

Spoiler:
Leonidas sends him back to tell the others about what they did because his special skill was storytelling. Everything is exaggerated because this is how Dilios explains it to the others.

Absolutely loved the film by the way. Pure entertainment.

Totaly...thats what i love about it! Its told as a story through the eye (haha) of a survivor to other Spartans, therefore the events accounted are embelished and overthetop...but it makes a great film. And yeah totaly, its sooo true to the comic. By far this is my personal favorite film of the last few years but i definetly see how it will not appeal to all film goers.

All that said and done...cant wait for Spiderman 3...fucking Venom...yaaaas!
