That sounds very cool, the stuff about Moore and Morrison should be interesting. and the stuff about British comics.
What a great thing to write a dissertation about. What topic are you thinking about tackling? A dissection of certain work/works or the cultural significance in general? |

I meant those 'emo' (please note I mean the pseudo emo poser scene kids, before we rehash the 'what is emo' and 'why todays 'emo' is not emo' debates) types... its hard to explain, I think its cos my ex did it thats why I'm so pissed at those people. He told me he read loads of comics and that.... but he'd never, he just one of those people who love american culture and this 'I'm secretly cool but I'll pretend I'm not cos I'm a geek who loves comics, and pacman/tetrtus' (and your like....''who doesn't?'')
I began to realise he was an idiot when he told me he loved to read and read loads... but only got through 2 books a year. Then he criticized my music taste compared to 'really good music like limp biscut, the rasmus and special D'. That guy was dumb. Breaking spines of books bothers me less now, cos I get most of my books of amazon so they're less than perfect. But I find it hard not to say something... but I'm an anal O.C.D freak. But folding the corners or breaking the spines of a book less than a year old or any comic is sacralige (sp?). I'm still not sure where I'm taking it and to be honest anyone with an opinion or suggestion please tell me cos I'm kinda lost for this dissertation... I had no interest in my course, I enjoyed propaganda and news values, youth and consumption (subcultures and drug consumption) and apart from that cultural products so I toyed with... looking at changing opinions of tattoos and graffitti art and how they're seen as more valid art forms now. Then looking at this contemporary almost film noir depressing isolated disconnected suburban thing (monkey dust, 6 feet under,) Or post generation x youth culture and look at bret easton ellis and this materialistic disconnected youth Or the occult and court cases and look at the portrayl and evidence of 'occult' activites in some of the recent teen killings...focusing on the west memphis three and luke mitchell (but then I heard someone who's recently done a study and used luke mitchell has raised questions as to his guilt so there stuff may be used in appeal... and I dont wanna get in a tricky legal situation.... I dont care about the cases just subculture side of it) Or cultural products based on such events...like 'elephant' and that film that got the director arrested 'duck' and dennis coopers book 'my loose thread' and 'we need to talk about kevin' Or gender and sexuality in comics or changing ideas of beauty etc and look at the suicide girls Or propaganda and comics ...But I dont really know... Cos if I do just a literature based one, apparently its harder. I dont really know how I'll approach it etc etc (sorry I'm aware I'm rambling... but any help or suggestions VERY MUCH appreciated). If you don't know what you'd like comic wise just start with eliminating what you don't like... I personally don't like superhero comics, but some people don't like political comics like maus. I love anything by Daniel Clowes (he did ghost world) and American Splendor and would recommend it to everyone and anyone... But to be honest I have been a little unimpressed with other stuff I've been recommended... like Strangers In Paradise... a little to soap opera for my liking and the gift is the only superhero comic I read...but I don't like the writing... I quite enjoy gloom cookie, fables and the devils panties is funny... But anyone wanting to try I'm willing to lend stuff (I like it when I find common interests) plus its one of those things...there's so much you are at a loss till you know what your looking for. To start with unless you know a title I'd stick to graphic novels and the vertigo label...vertigo is known as the HBO of the comic world. Last edited by jynx : 19th April 2007 at 02:39 AM. |

The comic world has really gone downhill for me over the past few years - they're just not fun anymore and, as has been pointed out, far too concerned with image. The thing is i'm not really sure whether this has anything to do with comics themselves or i'm (and i hate to say this) growing out of them shock! horror!
Im going to stick with it for a little while longer because escaping to the worlds of Plastic Man, The Hulk, Fantastic Four and my all time favourite Spiderman (ive always liked all the really camp ones) has provided me with a nice world from which to escape boring real life for a good many years. But to be honest i doubt it's going to be too long before my stack of books heads towards ebay! ![]() |
