I actually thought it was alright...but then again I was expecting to be disappointed. Rarely a movie made in the present as a sequel/prequel etc, of a film made years ago, lives up to the original.

The new Star Wars films were a total joke in this respect (and every other respect), they pointlessly used CGI in some places; there's a part in the third one I think where a couple of people run behind Anakin and Obi Wan and they're fucking CGI! Why? Who knows - that's using a special effect for a purpose that isn't special. I think it annoys me more when the settings are rendered in CGI, realistic looking sets have a much higher chance of suspending your disbelief. Obviously, this is impossible in some cases, but there were so many moments in the new Star Wars films where I was thinking 'wow, this looks like a piece of shit', rather than just accepting that what's there is actually there. I dunno, I Am Legend looks pretty good, a blend of CGI and reality works well, but agree, when its used for 80% of a film it begins to looks a bit shit.
But then, Final Fantasy Advent Children shows how CGI can look amazing. |

I like CGI, as long as it's done tastefully, used for a good reason, and looks better than the alternatives.
Some effects would be completely impossible, or extremely difficult to do otherwise. Terminator 2, for example would most likely have been completely impossible to make. An example of bad usage of CGI, would be the terminators in the future scene in Terminator 3. They look nowhere near as realistic as the animatronic terminators from Terminator 2. |

I think T2 is one of the best movies that uses both animatronics and CGI together, along with the first Jurassic Park movie. Jurassic Park 3 on the other hand looked a bit naff (T-Rex verses Spineasaur fight was a bit cack)and relied far more on CGI. |
