The Golden Compass
I know there's a thread on this already, but couldn't find it...so! this is out December 7th:
Apple - Trailers - The Golden Compass - Final Trailer Who's all going to see it? My first thoughts on this was its not going to live up to my expectations from the book trilogy, but after watching the trailer a few times I've decided I'm quite looking forward to it now ![]() |

I remember reading this in 4rth year english for my personal study thing for standard grade.
It was a great book. I bought the whole triology after finding out about it on the BBCs 100 top reads and was really interested to starting ready them, since they scored high on the list [- top 3 or sumthing like that?] Except i was stupid enough to not even work out wat was going on. I mean i got the basis of the story and all that. But you know when you read a story, you start playing it out in your head - seeing all the characters, what they look like, how they act etc, etc, well this was the only book if ever had trouble figuring out what was going on. And considering this was about 3/4 years ago now, i only hav a vague recollection of the whole book. I havent picked it up since then [basically cuz it just reminds me of standard grade english :S] and i havent tried to read the rest of the triology. So im quite excited to see them film. Sometimes films based on books are good. And itll give me clear understanding of what the whole books on about! And hopefully itll give me the motivation to finish the rest of the trilogy. So the only thing thats left to say is; do i read the book again before or after going to see the film? Or both? |

Oh, and here's the original thread. I don't know if a mod will want to merge them or whatever. http://www.undergroundscene.co.uk/fo...n-compass.html Last edited by .star* : 8th November 2007 at 08:13 PM. Reason: just 'cause. |

Hmm. Just went to see it. Wasn't as good as I'd hoped.

Asriel didn't kill Roger in the film, Roger didn't die. Instead the film implies he'll be accompanying the other characters on an "advernture". The film ends on Scoresby's balloon before they go to Asriels lab. She doesn't go through the rift either. The witches are in it for about 20 seconds, with no backstory. You can tell that Weitz did it though because Scoresby's balloon looks like a big set of testicles. It's pretty shit actually. |

I thought it was pretty good, although it totally fired along at a relentless pace and was probably pretty difficult for people to understand if they hadn't read the books. It just struck me as being heavily edited, like there was more material in there but they had to cut it due to time constraints or whatever. The reshuffling of events for no obvious reason was quite baffling as well. I liked Nicole Kidman as Mrs Coulter! I believe she was Pullman's first choice as well. She's got a cool monkey.
